I Am a Long Way From Home

I am a long way from home,
wandering the country as
if a gypsy traveling from
one destination to another.

I am a long way from home,
feeling homesick and missing
my mom's fried chicken and apple pies,
which she baked on special occasions.

I am a long way from home,
as I look out the window of the tour bus
recalling the days when life was simple
and family meant getting together.

I am a long way from home,
making the decision to join the band
as it travels from one gig to another,
listening to the roar of the crowds.

I am a long way from home,
being a traveling musician is getting old,
living on a bus is a constant roll on endless
miles of roadway giving me white line fever.

I am a long way from home,
as I decide to return to my loved ones,
appearing at the weathered door,
with my guitar and a smile of relief.
