How Was War
Up the hill went sixteen soldiers ready to be hardened warriors
Down the hill they returned, with torn uniforms and torn bodies.
Shocked and incensed, for it had been much worse than they had ever imagined.
Many had nightmares for the rest of their lives about it.
How was it? The newbies would ask as they entered the front lines.
Don’t go up there if you can help it, they warned them.
But they could not help it because they had to follow orders.
Because that is what soldiers do, and they had no choice.
