How Do You Think I Got Smart

What are you doing, grandpa? His little hooter grandchildren asked with heart. 
I am studying geology, their grandpa said, so I can tell rocks apart.
But why? They wanted to know. We always thought that you were smart.
How do you think I got this way? He said reaching for a new book from the cart.
