Notes About The Poem

6/9/2026 for All That Glass Poetry Contest sponsored by Nette Onclaud

Hourglass

Invisible, you are, but always, there,
as your sands, fall steadily, grain by grain,
while callow youths forget you without care,
you tick off days of happiness and pain.

Each moment, and each tiny grain of time,
as it goes from the future to the past,
can only fall, and never can it climb,
as those bygone days cannot be recast.

While your slim waist, but one grain will allow,
soon the last one's grim outcome will be wrought,
as I approach the closing, final "now",
I find solace in a comforting thought.

My grandchild's birth is coming soon and then,
hourglass, you'll be flipped over once again.

Thanks, Andrea! That's one good thing about these contests. The themes sometimes force me to be serious.

I enjoyed reading your "Hourglass" write. As a kid I loved to play with an hourglass. "Good Luck" I did, "Glass Half Empty." Have a blessed/fun day writing away..........

No, No, Darlene, thanks for asking! I was obsessing about my own end (ridiculous because I probably have 20 years to go), and how my future grandchild, unborn, unconceived will be like a new hourglass, so when my hourglass is done, another one will start). I suppose it's kind of an illusion that having grandchildren makes you eternal.
