Notes About The Poem

Hot Hedgehog

As hedgehogs we don’t get much work and thus get little pay
And that’s a shame because it’s grandma’s ninety eighth today
We can’t afford a birthday cake the shops charge quite a toll
But the baker’s just threw out a slightly stale Swiss roll

What a stroke of luck I thought, all I need now is candles
But then I found a hundred tucked behind some old fork handles *
I took my bargains home and put the candles in the cake
Which I hadn’t had to purchase and I hadn’t had to bake

We hedgehogs had a get together later on that night
I struck a match to light the cake and said turn out the light
A Swiss roll with a hundred birthday candles (all but two)
Went up like a beacon to enliven grandmas ‘do’

I turned around to grandma where she sat in silhouette
She didn’t answer when I asked her, ‘Do you want cake yet?’
I asked my grandson, Danny, does your grandma look excited
And Danny said it’s hard to tell… it’s granny you’ve ignited

Google ‘the two Ronnies, fork handles’]

Sooooo funny! Lighting up, Grandma or the golden oldie - Grandma got run over by a reindeer. Lest we forget the grandma who saved her family on Dante’s peak by jumping in acid water (saved the dog though) Well done, Terry!

Thank you, Kim. I felt a bit mean setting fire to granny hedgehog… but I content myself that it was all in the name of art. PHEWEY… I just thought it was funny. Terry

It difficult for a Brit to comprehend that in some parts the world the two Ronnies are unknown. They were our Saturday night for years. But that Fork Handles sketch was a classic.

Thanks, Deb. I don’t really believe in setting fire to hedgehogs… often.

As well as free birthday cake you handled funereal expenses. What a clever little hedgehog. Lol. I used to watch the two Ronnies in Australia. Absolutely love the British wit. SuZ

LOL. Oh, this is a good one, Terry. I kept laughing all through it. Poor ol' granny! I hope you got her put out.

I’m afraid it was barbecued toothpicks for supper. Glad you enjoyed, Milt. What made me think of incinerating a geriatric hedgehog I do not know… perhaps I’m just sick! ;-)

Your having us on Terry, bleedin fork handles, and you left out the O’s in grandma’s hose, but on the bright side I got a good laugh, the cremation of a gran is always a great line to end on, Cheers David

Slightly sick, perhaps, but it is fiction and there’s no such thing as a 98 year old hedgehog, so I should get away with it. Glad you had a laugh.

Thanks, Tom. I can’t imagine that that sketch isn’t known worldwide but I thought I should reference it… perhaps for some younger members. Hope you’re warm enough now you’re back in chilly Britain… Brrrrrr!
