Swap Quatrain
Created by Lorraine M. Kanter. Within the Swap Quatrain each stanza in the poem must be a quatrain (four lines) where the first line is reversed in the fourth line. In addition, line 2 must rhyme with line 1, and line 3 must rhyme with line 4 and so on, BUT not repeat the same rhyming pattern on subsequent stanzas. Rhyming pattern: AABB, CCDD, and so on.
Pessimism grows, in the mind of the old,
as we start questioning all we were told.
And seeking answers that nobody knows,
in the mind of the old, pessimism grows.
Aspirations get lost in youth's shadow,
for hormones no longer fuel life's gusto,
And our unfulfilled fantasies get tossed,
in youth's shadow, aspirations get lost.
Time opens youth’s eyes to the folly of man,
and old age wonders if God has a plan.
For knowing love will never compromise,
to the folly of man, time opens youth’s eyes.
Hope is a wish, wanting more never less,
for life's reality is, life's a mess.
And once offered lobster, we shun crawfish,
wanting more, never less, hope is a wish.
