Holding On To Nothing

Sometimes I walk in shadow
Or do shadows walk in me?
For in their umbral, empty glow
The dark is all I see.

The distant light of hope appears,
A pin-prick in the night.
I find the weight of all my fears
Enough to block such light.

I reach out just for something,
But -- in this world of black --
I'll hold on tight to Nothing
Until nothing holds me back.

Jesse, I want to thank you for this poem. The word play is amazing but the deeper message of hope for the hopeless resonated with me. Great job!

I am SO glad to read this comment. I worried perhaps that in leaving the interpretation so open-ended, that this meaning would be missed. I think it's an important thing to realize that in our moments of darkness there exists a hope - even if it seems diminished by our circumstances.
