Hold Fast

HOLD FAST! He held a rope over the pit into which I had fell, He offered me deliverance from the fiery place called hell. He said, “By faith just trust Me now, grab to this rope and climb, I promise I won’t let you go; eternal life you’ll find.” And so I started up the rope, but the struggle seemed so great, I felt my hand begin to slip back to the pit of fate. I wanted to give up and say, “This is too hard a task.” But then I heard the Saviour say, “Now don’t give up; hold fast!” And so as I held tightly there and looked up to the skies, I saw the Saviour smile at me with clear and loving eyes. He understood my weakness there, did not condemn my past, But rather said with loving grace, “Now don’t give up; hold fast!” Sometimes I think of what I was, of things I used to do, Of all the scars it left behind, and I become so blue. I realize that even now I struggle with the climb, For often thoughts come back again into my carnal mind. It gets to be so hard sometimes to keep my thoughts all pure, And there are even times I think I just cannot endure. I get almost unto the point I think the rope I’ll cast, But then He says again to me, “Now don’t give up; hold fast!” As I grow nearer to the time when life will end for me, The climb will be forever o’er, and His dear face I’ll see, I know that as I near the end and look back at the strife Of sin and shame and struggling that I’ve gone through in life, Each time I wanted to give up, felt I just could not last, There was that voice that always said, “Now don’t give up; hold fast!”
