Higher Expectations

Let's reflect on the essence
of being spiritual beings.
Amongst the pain and confusion
life offers, and the finality of death;
there is also faith, hope, trust, and love.
We're endowed with consciousness,
and a conscience, which defines the human heart;
buttressing the poorest foundations,
to carry the weight
of higher expectations.
Miracles only happen
to those who believe they can.
Often, looking back
shows a distorted image of reality;
more a reflection of a fear,
filtered through the passage of time.
When hate cannot erase yesterday,
it tries to reshape tomorrow;
by penciling in the actions of today.
Bigotry's jagged edges
can cut as deep as any knife;
draining the heart of love,
and the soul of hope.
Skin color is a human obsession;
God is color-blind,
as is Man's best friend, the dog!
