Hesitation
Drum, drum, drum, drum,
The beating of the hearts,
The air dense with uneven breaths,
Hesitation.
Intimate faces but strangers now
What a twist
Of chances that we both muster a “hello,”
Sinking into buzz lines of music,
A sip of Flaming Dr. Pepper,
Hesitation.
Drum, drum, drum, drum,
The hearts knock behind thick
Walls, the music,
The camouflage for the chill
Air, static that can kill a fly
In one zap.
Hesitation.
A chilling war,
A gulp of Boiler Maker
To erupt any lines, to combust,
To blast dynamite through walls,
To make them crumble,
To die,
Hesitation.
Nursing the empty cup,
The palpitation, the thickness
Of the condensing air.
A drum of defeat,
Hesitation.
Leaving you in one piece
To nurse the Dark And Stormy.
