Heroes

Now, you’ve heard of
Superman, Batman, Spiderman,
just to name a few.
Comic book heroes
created for enjoyment.
But, have you heard
of the real heroes?
Do you know them by name?
Are there any around you?
Of course, there are!
The grocer,
who allowed the woman
with three screaming kids
and not enough money
to go
and not worry
about paying him back.
The office worker,
who helped that woman
with her packages
when he saw her
on the city street.
The police man,
who gave her a blanket
instead of kicking her
away from the park bench
on that cold, wet night.
The woman, herself,
who, despite overwhelming odds,
manages to do her best
and is able to bring out the hero
in us all.
Let us be thankful
for all those
we can now recognize
as heroes,
for one
may be standing next to you
at this very moment.
