Heart Broken

It seemed as if the air was sucked
out of my lungs, my breathe in tatters
I heard my heart break into a million pieces
The sound of it shook out my tears
Like shards of glass falling, each memory
etched in every drop that fell out of love
Can I ever revive those butterflies that fluttered
each time you were close?
All of those nights of stars and dreams
Can I ever hold a hand in trust?
Walk away if you must, loneliness steadily
chisels away at my soul as I exist
A scar where my heart was, and a tattoo on my wrist!
One more heart broken, as you add it to your list!

Carol, I can only echo the comments of the ladies below. A real and heartfelt poem. I really like your shards of glass imagery and association that you use - it adds an extra dimension to your words and highlights the pain of lost love as do the questions you ask. You may feel empty and even neglected but that will pass. You can certainly write moving poetry. Cheers - Gary

I can feel the pain within these lines. Sad that some people don't have the ability to be monogamous or to truly love another person. Congratulations on your winning work. Way to go. Sara

Oh Carol, your imagery of grief is so vibrant and imaginative - "a scar where my heart was." And I really like the questions about your ability to love again in the future. Congratulations on your win. Blessings, prayers and a hug.
