Notes About The Poem

Jove: Another name for Jupiter. Jupiter is known as the "King of Planets". What I mean here by using Jove is that God is King over all. Psalm 95:3 "For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods." Jove could be a shortened form of Jehovah by translation and transliteration of Hebrew, Greek and Latin. I speak of Elvira Madigan and Maria Goretti.

Heart Attic

In the attic’s silent gloom I stand
Nostalgia’s weight held in my hand
Memories crowd and climb each stair
A letter unopened, waiting there
Stamped UAA and meant for me
A message lost across the sea
Like Madigan and Goretti of old
I break the seal and secrets unfold
We parted ways, me off to fight
A kiss goodbye, then out of sight
Words unsaid, hearts concealed
A child within you, unrevealed
The moment lost as the war begun
I vanished with the setting sun
This secret kept as years went by
A silent sorrow swept by and by
Ten years have gone by since you’ve passed on
I read your words as I’m carried along
Anger mingles with my grief
The letter steals my heart like a thief
We never lived the life we dreamed
A traditional family was not meant to be
Yet thankful still we wed before
I had to fight another war
Now in the attic’s gentle dim
I decorate my heart for Him
Melancholy and nostalgia’s plight
I light my tree but eclipsed Your Light
Forgive me Lord, help me get back on track
Help me to look forward (and not look back)
Until the day we meet above
By Jove, Love and The Dove

Epilogue
She writes:
It's Tuesday morning and I am thinking about you, and how you made me realize I was lonely when I first met you. I fell for you as the snow was falling down around us. I will think of you often as you have made a commitment to our country. I will miss every moment that you are away. Oh and by the way, I am with child. I can't wait to see you again, and hold you and tell you that I love you. I am happy at the prospect of our life together.

(Of course I never received the letter, and she passed away (as did the child) in an automobile accident, before my return)

Here I sit in this attic, with the letter in hand and my heart rend.
