He was a Kindly Man

He Was a Kindly Man
Kevin Davis 2024

He was a kindly man.
His voice he never raised in ire.
When I was born, he was already
A father tried and wired
To care for yet another child—
The third in growing line,
Born to parents quiet, wise,
Whose love would shape our time.

They found each other in a war
Still raging through the land,
And married in our mother’s home
With hope held in their hands.
Their union brought six children forth—
Three daughters and three sons;
He labored hard to meet our needs,
She guided everyone.

From home she led with steady love,
With order, warmth, and grace,
While he provided faithfully
A strong, enduring base.
Side by side they shaped our days,
Their devotion always clear;
Within their pillars of gentle strength
We grew in safety there.

Then one by one we ventured out
To walk our separate ways;
Our parents watched with patient pride
Those long-awaited days.
But just as quiet filled their nest,
And life had turned above,
Our father left this earthly world—
Yet never left our love.

His memory lingers, steadfast, bright,
In laughter that we share,
In lessons lived and passed along
With thoughtful, tender care.
Through all he taught, his spirit moves
Within each child we raise;
His living love continues on
Beyond his numbered days.

How blessed we were to grow within
The shelter of his hand;
Our parents’ love gave each of us
A place to firmly stand.
We learned to love and show that love
In all we choose to do—
A gift that flows through us today,
Still shaped and formed by you.

As man and husband, friend and father,
I strive to honor him,
To live in ways that he and Mom
Would praise with knowing grin.
I love you, Dad—I miss you still,
Ever conscious of you by my side.
And speak your name with pride.
