He Saw a Fire in Her Eyes

He Saw a Fire in Her Eyes

He saw a fire in her eyes that wanted to consume his body and his fate,
He thought himself lucky... but luck was just a gentle lie arriving late,
He placed rebel dreams into her palms like a love born in the first snow,
He made her a necklace of stars... and the stars burned too fast... and let go.

She smiled beautifully and in her gaze the whole bright sky would gleam and shine,
He called it all love... dancing around the fire... thinking it divine,
But that burning fire faded slowly beneath the ash of cold and passing time,
And today he sees her walking by... and feels nothing... and life moves on... sublime.

He did not mourn her with many tears but with silences that ache more every day,
When the heart begins to listen to everything that was lost along the way,
The ash and the ruin now occupy the place where something holy used to burn,
And he remains a story... written by time... with nowhere left to turn.

His pride with its long winter stride caught his soul in ice and sealed his doom,
It would have been simple to let the words flow freely across the room,
He was not afraid of love... but of its power to break him into pieces small,
And he built high walls around his heart... with his own hands... through each frozen dawn and fall.

It is the sentence he carries through time like a chain rattling at every step,
The wrinkles on his forehead and the darkened hair at his temples all that's left,
That chapter in the story where fate slowly and methodically put him to rest,
Remains open... unfinished... and painful... and like an addiction in his chest.

And he writes lines... lines... with a soul too bitterly wounded and worn thin,
Every verse a scar... every rhyme a buried cry rising from within,
The ash of that old fire still flickers sometimes in the late and hollow night,
He blows on it carefully... and fears... that it might come back to light.
