He Had a Life

A tear fell from her eye
a smile on her face
as she wrapped her baby up
holding him in place

"He's smart" they said
when they looked at his test
they said he'd go places
in his class he was best

tears fell from his eyes
though he tried to keep them in
his mother just lost a battle
they both had hoped she win

so young and on his own
he tried to make it through
a dark road lay before him
as he lost the life he knew

to poor to pay the bills
though he worked a job or two
they kicked him to the streets
there was nothing he could do

though much older now than then
he still lives on the streets
he cannot afford a place
he cannot afford to eat

yet you say he's a drunk
that's he's only got himself to blame
kid's see him on the street
and think oh that guy is lame

but this man has a story
that to believe you'd have to see
this man a life once
as well as a family

oh my, so sad this is. Everyone's story is so different and we just can't know by seeing them on the street, the pain they have endured.
