Hard Work Never Hurt Nobody

If only I had listened,
Had taken time to look,
My daddy could have fed me
Rich fodder for a book.

Double negatives were of no concern.
Daddy’s words were always plain.
If he told you once you didn’t wait
To hear it once again.

I don’t know how he did it.
He did not resort to force.
He gentled my big brothers
Much like he would a horse.

“Awaken now”, he’d call them
On a snowy winter’s day.
Without protest they would arise
To give the horses hay.

I was a mere bystander
To the training of a brother.
His daughters learned the ways of life
Just as surely from our mother.

My daddy was the first to rise,
Always took the hardest task.
When he needed help from healthy sons
All he needed do was ask.

“Hard work never hurt nobody”
Was Daddy’s standing rule.
A man with hands in pocket,
He deemed lazy or a fool.

He lived to age of seventy-nine
When cancer caused his death.
“Hard work never hurt nobody,”
He would claim to his last breath.

Always wise, our Fathers knew exactly what to say at the appropiate time, Joyce! Enjoyed reading this and will add to my favs. list. If this is for a contest, good luck! I'm still trying to catch up on reading and leaving comments. In between I'll have to judge and write a couple for contests. Blessings, peace and joy for the coming New Year, again! lol Love, Audrey
