Notes About The Poem

Written 14th November 2025

Hard to Believe

Once a poor needy child turned up at school
In just an oversized jumper, no shoes
She was soon taken from out of the class
Never saw her again, the poor sad lass.

I recall her, hoping that all is well
Did she find happiness, or was life hell
Maybe she's a wife and a mother too
I sincerely hope all her dreams came true.

Thank you Curtis, it’s hard to see a child like that, with no shoes or suitable clothes on their back. Once seen, never forgotten… Beryl

Hi Jennifer, it was a sad day, to see a small girl come into school dressed so badly. I hope she was loved and that it was all down to poverty, which, back in those days, was often the case. Thank you, love and hugs returned… Beryl

Wow, why was she taken from class - because of no shoes? Sad. It's funny how some of those things stick so strongly in our memories. I remember a girl who came to our kindergarten class and just cried and cried, so they sent her home, and she never came back that year.

I hope she did well, too! I bet she did. Folks are resilient.

Thank you David, I imagine the school would have considered the girl was a child in need, they would have contacted social services, that’s what I think would have happened. I hope the girl did well… Beryl

Dear Beryl, It left me thinking about how many people we cross paths with briefly and then never know what became of them. That mix of sadness and hope you captured feels very real. I like how you kept it direct and uncluttered, as it makes the memory feel even more vivid. Autumn Blessings, Dear Beryl, Daniel

Great work to remind us of what poverty can do to a person. I can feel the emotion in each line. I hope she had a better life at some point in her life. Sara K

Yes, it’s sad to say many children suffered poverty back in the day. Thank you Sara
