Happy Birthday America 250
I recently read a quote from a great American.
He is considered to be great because of his
accomplishments and achievements made
in his lifetime, not because of everything he said.
His quote, addressing the contradictions of
The American Republic was relevant at
The time. Moreover, his quote provided
The inspiration for this short poem.

The lion said to the eagle,
"I do not claim to be superior
Nor more righteous than you,
But I must say that I know your history.
And to all the world, it is not a mystery.
In your pursuit to push further west,
You committed atrocities you now regret.
In your greed and longings for progress,
You slaughtered people and enslaved others.
As if forgetting the freedoms for which you fought,
you became tyrants like those who terrorized you.
Moreover, the evils that you overcame
became the evil inside of you."
The eagle then said to the lion.
"It is indeed true what you have said.
Notwithstanding, I have since made
Amends for my many sins. I have been forgiven.
I am now growing in God's Good graces.
And because of God's Goodness and mercy,
We both have cause to celebrate this 4th of July.
