We live,
not in the age of innocence
or indeed in the age of enlightenment or reason,
this is no dry white season
bursting full with fruit plucked dripping from the vine,
not a vintage wine.

We live in the age of analysis,
of righteous rage entitlement and indignation.
Every public word, heard or read or spoken,
is judged, every deed displayed,
weighed, put to the balance
and found to be wanting.

There are no more universal truths,
no solid incontrovertible proofs,
facts are peppers,
inconvenient weeds just waiting to be crushed
beneath the hearsay wheels of people speak,
the unimportant and the trite is given undue merit
and held to be right in spite of dissonant voices raised,
considered and contrary thought which often comes to nought
and ends in silence.

Appalling and unparallelled acts of violence
are given time space to breathe,
to plead the injured party
while others lay and bleed.

We examine everything, revealing little but the bones
beneath this bitter angry stupid savage age,
which constantly ignores the wisdom of the turning page
and puts its faith and hope into machines which think
but do not blink or breathe or even smile.

Humanity in all its vanity
may be approaching,
or certainly encroaching
on its final mile.
