Grief Is a Chain Reaction

Grief is a chain reaction,
sending sparks along neurons,
shooting spasms across muscle.

- water rising
from earth
through root
up bark
across branch -

Grief is an element,
firing shame inside memory,
spiralling gales within words.

- soft dew
upon grass
soaked into
morning air
you breathed -

Grief is directionless,
spinning babies upon plates,
cutting love with a scythe.

- brother sister
uncle aunt
youngest eldest
daughter son
husband wife -

Grief is a body made flesh,
it keeps chambers pink, pumping,
it brings mourning to life.
