Greetings From the Lower East Side
New York's Lower
East Side
Is full of Hispanics
blacks and Chinese
The Friends of the House
of Sages is there as well
as it has been
for over 80 years
Now summer is
here
A man sells flavored
ice from a cart
A young couple embraces
By the benches
Spanish men gather
to talk and
play dominoes
A beardee Orthodox
man tells jokes at
the bus stop
Children laugh and
teenagers walk to school
There are murals
on the walls
Depiciting the struggles
of the past
The asphalt
homeland
is full of life
A Chinese crossing guard woman
smiles
The city opens its
arms this summer
Those of us
on the Lower East Side
face the future
with anticipation
And not a little hope
