Notes About The Poem

Greedy Poaching

GREEDY POACHING

Rhino poachers often hunt at night
When the Rhino has poor eye sight.
These prehistoric creatures
Cannot distinguish human features.
But with a well-developed sense of smell
Fortunately they can always tell
When danger or a poacher is close,
Thanks to their sensitive nose.
Every horn that they take back,
And Rhino body that they hack,
Is yet more money in their belt,
To which no sentiment is felt.
Subsistence Poachers who randomly
Kill, fit a less important role,
Their profit cannot compare,
To syndicates with international flair!
These professionals are sourced
From a military career,
Using weapons and tactics that
Inflict unimaginable pain and fear.
Rhinos are darted from the air,
Without hesitation or human care.
Some Rhinos are found still half alive,
And veterinary surgeons rush to help
Them survive,
But could these same people perhaps
Be involved and accept,
These horrific acts, could they in fact,
Be suspect?
Will Rhinos become extinct,
This is a worrying fear,
Statistics do indicate that this scenario,
Is realistically near!

Your poem is well constructed and on point ,Jennifer. My opinion: Shoot to kill all poachers on sight Save the Rhino. All the best Warren

Hi Warren, Lovely that you visited! These heartless murderers come out in the stealth of night, and make sure or pretty sure, they wont be seen. Despicable people. Kind regards, Jennifer

Hello Jennifer … the world needs to hear and read more from people like you Jennifer who have closer knowledge on murdering animals in Africa, particularly for Rhinos, Elephants and Lions for body parts that really don't improve anything. If a multitude of laymen writers and poets spoke of the reality perhaps the rest of the world might take note - thank you Jennifer - Lindsay

Hi Lindsay, Hopefully, my modest contribution of a poem may help if accumulated with a great many more. These poachers are filthy, greedy people but they are just the man in the street, the master minds are sitting pretty in their penthouses! Yes, we must safe this magnificent prehistoric animal. Thank-you Lindsay for a very meaningful comment! Best wishes, Jennifer.

A very sad but true poem. If they don't stop killing our Rhino's we will only have photo's and memories of what they looked like. Kim

You are right David, I feel the same, but there are people with power and money involved, perhaps even in high up and respected positions, so our voice would be like one in the wilderness! I understand your passion though, makes me feel sick in the pit of my stomach! Thank-you for your visit! Kind regards, Jennifer

Your inference and suggestion that there are complex forces at work that will lead to the unfortunate conclusion is quite astute. How does our behavior enable what is really bad in society? Now looking at the root cause sometimes requires a mirror that provides a nasty reflection. Looking at the root cause takes a really special kind of person. You are one of those. This is an award winner in my heart.

Thank-you Duke, lovely comment. These monsters have to be stopped, they are nothing more than murderers. How does one fight great power and fast flowing money, only with the power of words! Hopefully light forces notice and will take heed and run with it! Thank-you once again. Best wishes, Jennifer

Thank you Michelle, A great many of my poems are dedicated to our wildlife that are been hacked to death for one horn or two tusks. It is a crying shame. Wise comment. Take care, xoxo, Jennifer

Apart from the caring aspect of your poem, Jennifer, the comment below, rightly say the right and positive things. The poem itself is an excellent informative statement., in rhyme, which creates a wonderful flowing read..love this...Harry,

So happy that you enjoyed my poem Harry, that makes me so glad! I watch wild life documentaries nearly every night, and feel sad that these beautiful creatures,d so innocent and so vulnerable are been so brutally attacked and killed. Remember the film when the apes turn against humanity, I am certain that at some stage these magnificent beasts will have their revenge. Best wishes Harry, Regards, Jennifer.

Ya know, sometimes I think there should be poachers who hunt poachers. This is so sad and unacceptable in today's world. Great write Jennifer! On the brighter side, what do you get when you cross an elephant and a rhino? Elephino…(Hell if I know)..lol Nice to meet you....all the best, Charlie

Hi Charlie, Thanks for dropping by, nice to meet you also! Yes poaching has certainly become a 21st century disaster and has become a world wide issue. The problem remains that too many wealthy people are involved in these syndicates, the same as is happening with drugs and it is becoming harder and harder to smoke them out! Nice one about the Elephino - lol! But careful, you might get a summons from the SPCA! Best wishes, Jennifer.

Sadly extinction is becoming a reality for these beautiful creatures'. Poachers are not bothered as they're making big money. More needs to dine or the the only place you'll see them is in a book. Tom.

Sadly yes Tom, more policing is needed and very harsh laws passed to deal with these wicked people. Thank-you for your comment. All the best, Jennifer.

Sans genetic engineering, White Rhinos will become extinct after a mother and daughter die. Imagine how many people could be fed by Dodo birds if humanity was not so stupid and actually cared about the resources that sustain us! Well said, Jennifer! Aloha! Rico

Dodo birds did not stand a chance! However, I agree with you about genetic engineering been necessary for without it the rhino's will fade away and only will be heard and spoken of an era gone by! Unfortunately however genetic engineering I understand, still needs a lot more development. Thank-you for a very meaningful comment Rico, Yasou, Jennifer.
