Notes About The Poem

In my youth today's flipflops were called thongs.

Grandma Wears Thongs

February 14th.
Fifty three degrees.
What? Get out your bikini.
Kick off those shoes.
It is time to break out the Koolaid.
Plunk in the ice cubes.
Use Grandma's aluminum glasses
The ones from the 50's that keep things cold.
Where is my surfboard?
My swimsuit coverup?
My suntan lotion?
My thongs?
Grandma! Giggle. Giggle. "You WEAR thongs!"
Sure do, I say proudly, holding up my flip flops.
Confusing them every time.

I love it that things are so different, and we can confuse the young.

Thank you Ann. I have to keep them moving so I am interested. I throw out a bunch because they just seem so blah.

Thank you P.M. One day I was wondering what a flip flop was, when I finally caught on they were taking about my thongs. I then mentioned their "pedal pushers" and they thought I was talking about their feet. I had no idea "pedal pushers" are now capris.

Haha! I love this Caren! Especially the last few lines. I've said that to my grand kids. They did not know how to react until I told them they were flip flops. Have a great weekend. Susan

Can you imagine how crazed they would be if we introduced them to the slang "headlights" of the '50's?
