Notes About The Poem

Granddads Little Girl

Granddads Little Girl

This first day of the New Year,
May I whisper something in your ear
To wish you a very bright life,
As a baby, as a child, as a wife,
To tell you to stick this in your mind,
Be wise, be generous, be kind,
Be good with your father and mother,
Be always devoted to each other,
Be nice to any human creature,
Be Our Lord’s soul, the living picture,
Be friends to animals and birds,
And make them become your friends,
Be in love with Justice,
Be the enemy of vice,
Have no other than truth for passion,
For your life’s every inspiration,
Thus you should make yourself,
Worthy and proud of your Nation.

PS this is the original letter with my grand-fathers poem he wrote for me a couple of years after I was born.

WoW! Jenny, Your letter from your granddad was filled with love and wisdom. He gave you good advice to live by. In fact, any little girl, teenager, and woman reading could live by it, because it's such sound advice. It sounds like you had an amazing grandfather. Excellent job my friend:-) Alexis

Such a lovely piece Jennifer, really impressive writing. For sure you've taken your grandfathers skill as a writer. Hope all is well with you as I heard from a friend in Johannesburg that it's rife with covid, take care and keep safe we're in on holiday in Scottish borders this week and it's mostly wet. Blessings and hugs, Gordon

We all love our grandfathers - The Greeks believe that a grandchild is twice a child to a grandparent who loves them twice as much. Thanks for a lovely comment, hope you spend many happy hours with your grandchildren. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Thank-you Jan it certainly does get handed done genetically. This is my Greek grandfather, who went t boarding school in England and then studied again in England to become an ophthalmologist - he had been anglicized from a young age and was a total Anglophile. It was no wonder when the British troops came to Greece to liberate them after the war, he opened his huge house to the British troops, thus my mom met my dad and thus I am half Greek and Half English, and love both nations. Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.
