Notes About The Poem

Listen to poem:

Gone But Not Forgotten

Those we have loved and passed are never far from us, often visiting us in our dreams
and always with us in our memories.
Quote by poet.

I went for a walk in the countryside it, was a warm June day.
My wife Sue accompanied me, and we had packed a picnic.
After an hour we stopped on the top of a hill overlooking a
valley where a river flowed through it and we just stared at
its serene beauty. We loved outings like this where if only for
a short time we had the whole wide world to ourselves.
Sue picked some wildflowers to press and frame so she
could hang them on our wall at home. Suddenly I heard a
loud ringing, it was my daughter checking to see if I was okay.
I told her that I'd been having a beautiful dream and that her
mom was with me, but she had died tragically six years ago,
leaving me with dreams and only happy memories of her.

Tom, I like what you've made here and the matter of fact story-like quality. It's truly a pleasure to read something like this. Indeed, others we've been fond of stay alive in our hearts and minds and we truly miss having them with us. Death and loss are sad aspects of life we all deal with, and you've described them so well and in such human terms. It's touching.

Thank you very much Charlie, I’m sure it’s their way of letting us know all is well on the other side. Must admit I’ve been scarce too, had a busy 2025 with travelling and creating a slide show for a family reunion. Hope you too and your family are keeping well and that your new year is off to a good start. Tom

Thank you very much Kim, I often wonder is it because we don’t want to let go of loved ones passed that we can feel their presence. Tom

I rarely dream of my dead wife. She died peacefully and she was a good woman. Your poem is full of great imagery. Sad ending though. Luck with the contest. I have stopped entering contests now.

Happy New Year Tom, I’ve been reflecting on your poem, Tom. The image of Sue picking wildflowers to 'press and frame' feels like such a powerful metaphor for what you’re doing with this poem, trying to preserve a beautiful, fleeting moment so it can stay on the 'wall' of your memory forever. It’s a deeply insightful tribute to the way we navigate loss through the beauty of what remains. Winter Blessings, Tom, Daniel
