"going Places...."

Recognized, for a small collection

Drawn over time....Notified....Certified

I wonder if they'll give me

A bronze statue for that

Or perhaps a plaque, and

A pat on the back?

High fives all around

"Your going places boy

Try to keep your feet

Upon the ground....

No party complete you know

If your not in town"

So they tell me

And, so I hear....

I wonder, if they'll give me

Some chips with my beer?

Looking at their faces

All their gowns, and all their ties

Caviar and cocktails

And a few, low fives....

I wonder, if they'll give me

A star made of gold

Twenty-four karat, so

It doesn't rust, when I grow old?

"Your going places boy

Try to keep your head

Beneath the clouds....

Here....There....There come the crowds"

Pretty faces....Warm embraces

"Heres my number....'Call me'

When their not around!"

So, this is it....This

Is where it all begins?

"Your going places boy

How does it feel, now

That your in!?"

Now....

I wonder, if I want it

Their accolades....And all their tin

Pondering....Maybe I'll pass, this time

The glory....Without the sin?

"Your going places boy

All you gotta do....Is smile....And....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
....Pretend!?"
Dear John, no pretenses in this riveting work. I can feel the hustle, bustle and need to impress, as well as the wondering afterward if the efforts were worth it. Indeed, "You're going places" where other writers haven't taken me with this one. Sorry to say I'm feeling worse today. I have ulcerative colitis and two benign tumors; somedays are worse than others. Thanks for reading "Breaking." Love you for caring, Carolyn
Such an insightful, thought provoking poem, John. So often in life we are seeking, working, striving for things, when in the end....do we really want them?? Are they just empty goals that we are expected to pretend to smile and accept? It is hard to go against the norm and refuse to join the club. Pretense is emptiness. Well said, in this poem!~ Sincerely, Carrie
