Notes About The Poem

Go Gentle Into the Night

With a nod to Dylan Thomas...

I go gentle into the night
Those when moonlight fondles the sea
And those when its pallid in flight,
barely glowing through clouds at me

I go gentle into the night
without need to rage against life
nor the urge to purge from my sight
drummers who overflow with rife

I go gentle into the night
as every day comes to its end
waking before a glimpse of sunlight
mingles with dawn's blush as they blend

How can you not go gentle into the night, beneath the splayed moonlight full of beauty

Dear Lin, today you were Gentle on My Mind. :} Oh my, flipping Dylan Thomas on his head like this. Choosing to "go gentle" instead of raging feels less like giving up and more like a refusal to be exhausted by the noise of the "drummers." I particularly like the image of the moonlight "fondling the sea" it sort of gives the night a softness that makes the lack of a "fight" feel completely earned. Lin, A very calm, grounded way to frame the transition from the day’s chaos into the dawn. Amen! Blessings, Daniel

My thanks to you, Daniel for always clearly seeing my intentions. Some mistake concern for rage… the drummers. I always appreciate when you tell me the phrases you find particularly interesting. Merci for your gentle thoughts.

Lovely write…the movement of moonlight, not giving in to the drummers pounding, and lovely last lines.

Nothing beats a nighttime stroll on a clear night with the pale light of the moon. It's so peaceful and relaxing. Tom
