Glass Half Empty
Nette Onclaud
ALL THAT GLASS
06/08/26
Perhaps we are all born
as a glass half - empty.
Not because we are lacking something,
but because emptiness is necessary.
A full glass can not receive;
growth requires space.
As children, we do not fill ourselves.
Parents pour beliefs. Grandparents pour memories.
Teachers pour knowledge. Friends pour belonging.
While some pour, others take.
Cruelty can remove more water than years of praise can restore.
Negelct is not an act of pouring out; it is the refusal to pour at all.
Betrayal creates leaks. Fear clouds the water.
Loss drains entire cupfuls at once.
No one reaches adulthood carrying the same amount with which they began.
Rain falls on every glass:
opportunities, relationships,
successes, failures,
moments of beauty, moments of grief.
Perhaps what differs
is the way we choose to position our glass.
Some learn to hold theirs upright.
They allow experience to collect.
They extract meaning from hardship,
and gratitude from fortune.
The rain that falls on them remains.
Others tilt theirs toward the ground.
Resentment spills what joy gathers.
Pride prevents fresh rain from entering.
Fear convinces them to shelter from every storm.
Eventually, every glass cracks.
Heartbreak. Failure. Time itself.
Cracks may seem like flaws
because they allow water to escape,
but water trapped indefinitely becomes stagnant.
The cracks serve another purpose -
they allow what is inside us to flow outward.
Compassion often escapes through the same fractures
that pain entered through.
Understanding leaks from old wounds.
Those most capable of recognizing another person's suffering,
are usually those whose own glasses have broken before.
For this, the fullest glass is not always the richest life.
The best glasses overflow.
Not because they possess more, but because they
are willing to release what they have.
Encouragement, generosity, patience, wisdom, love -
these are forms of water that increase by being poured,
rather than diminished.
And, still, no glass remains full.
Life continues to take. Life continues to give.
Rain falls. Water evaporates.
Cracks deepen. New water arrives.
The condition of being half - empty,
was never a flaw: it is the fundamental condition of being human.
We are born with space inside us
because life is meant to spend decades filling it.
And, even then, the empty space within us is not proof of what we lack,
but evidence that we are capable of becoming more
than we currently are.
