Girl

Your hands slide up your arms
Like you're cold,
Your fingers slide into each other
Like you're lonely,
Your arms cross
Like you're afraid,
Your foot taps up and down
Like you're irritated.

Girl,
With your black lashes
And pink slashes,
Your furrowed brows,
Your why’s and how’s,
Your here’s,
Your now’s.

Girl,
Your eyes dart around
Like hummingbirds;
What are you looking for?
Your eyes are dark
Like the moonlit sea;
What have you already seen?
Your eyes fill with tears
That tremble but never fall;
What secrets do you keep?

Girl,
The world is a shadow realm
And we are all as dark
As you.
You,
With your fingers and arms,
Your lashes and slashes,
Your here’s and why’s
And vacuum eyes
That pull in everything,
But give nothing back.
