From My Neighbors House

I have heard from his house cries of delight And I have also heard some cries of pain. I have listened as talk would set things right Then wrong again as they start to complain. I have heard the door slam many goodbyes, Then swing open with invitations. I have heard answers I knew must be lies And countless loving salutations. I have heard the children laughing at play And silence, as if they were in hiding. I have heard excitement in what they say, And stammer in response to painful chiding. I heard these things as a neighbor will And I cursed his open windows, But I saw his were closed as I neared my sill And knew I heard my own echoes.
