From My Cabin

From my cabin in Willow, Alaska, Sleeping Lady greets me each day, she is the princess 'Susitna' who is asleep, her story is woven with several myths, Grandma told me a native legend of old, about a young woman who waited in vain for her warrior Nekatla who never arrived, growing tired she fell asleep and did not wake up, their love was approved by the stars above and the Tribe of the Giant People of the land, to protect their people, a tragic battle occurred, a warring enemy tribe slew the warriors including her love who never returned, the women of Suisitna's tribe let her sleep for not wanting to share the sad news, together they made a blanket of grass and flowers and covered it on her sleeping and still body, Grandma with her wrinkled face ended the story, Princess Susitna will not awake until Nekatla returns, from my cabin in Willow, Alaska Sleeping Lady greets me each day as she sleeps waiting for her love to wake her up.
