From Distant Shores (Elena)

Golden waves
roll in from a distant shore,
    but would she
offer me her neck?

  Lithe form
    like the undulating sands
along the Nile
  shifting with each step,
    but would that step
end at my door?

  Tall and picturesque,
    as if formed
from the same stone
  that the Greeks carved
    their gods and goddesses,
but will I be able
  to brush off
    the last chips
from this living statue?

  From a town
    filled with catacombs
and an illusion
  of mystery,
    and still I wonder,
will it be something
  that I can explore
    and seek its wonders?

With all that life throws,
  the foreign seems pristine,
    the untouchable
draws you in,
  but is the intrigue
    worth the sacrifice,
is that which falls on my plate
  what I deserve
    or just the distractions
that I find at every turn?

Mark, I like what you have done here and it is sad that lesser poems than this get praised to the highest. The fact took care to lay out this poem for visual impact and that you have carefully measured the stanzas and lines to make a beautiful poem, is much to your credit. I like the language of this and it has a more modernist feel to it than 'romanticist'. but it could be argued that this is modernist romanticism. Whatever, this is a great achievement.

I speak to myself too sometimes, especially when I'm stressed or just need someone who will listen with an objective point of view.-A
