Frizzle and Fray
Northern lights fizzle and fray above my head,
A kaleidoscope of magnetic whispers,
Blending with my thoughts, connecting me
To all living things, lighting the snow,
Making it sparkle with electric potential.
I can see the supermoon,
Its colossal presence dominating the sky,
I swear I see Hadley-Rille and the Sea of Tranquility.
So close, yet as distant as the Andromeda Galaxy,
My inner tranquility is a fragile mirage,
Disturbed by the shadows of humanity's plight.
I saw a girl with phantom limbs, live on TV,
Broadcast from a children’s hospital in Rafa, Palestine.
A soldier, legless and homeless, wandering the streets of Philadelphia.
Someone leaping from a 200-story window,
Fleeing from the fire’s merciless crawl.
Craters of my existence, echoes of ridicule and torment,
Asteroids battering my soul like my sister moon,
Trapped in orbits of sorrow, lured by unseen forces.
I have surrendered to the growing darkness,
Trying to escape this planet's polluted breath.
On this Nativity night, trees wrapped in opulence,
Warmed by our well-meaning hearts,
Merry wishes draped on mantles of hope.
Feeding the homeless, wrapping shoeboxes
With simple treasures for children in distant lands.
Volunteering my time, my soul, my sanity.
What good is a shoebox of toys in bombed-out ruins?
Futility hangs heavy, a shadow over my efforts.
The rich will discard us when automation reigns,
We are mere toast, roasted meat.
Trees bend under the weight of ornate ornaments,
Their pride stripped, they droop and shed to survive.
We have become a farce, hiding trees from winter’s deadly chill,
Decorating them with our material obsessions.
I take a drag from my Christmas Eve smoke,
Marijuana, triangle mint strain, mingled with tobacco,
A nostalgic blend, echoing the old days.
I inhale the intoxicants, chemicals swirling.
The moon swells, turns blue, weeping like my sister moon,
Then blood red, like the eternal fires of hell or Malibu’s flames.
Red as cardinals, cloaked in the blood of innocent babes,
The martyrs, victims of humanity's crimes.
The harvest moon of lust, bad seeds in misery’s soil.
Underage boys with guns, girls losing boundaries.
I take another puff. The moon flickers like a siren,
Red, blue, red, blue, then vanishes, a blurry comet
Escaping Earth’s grasp, abandoning us to fate.
Tired of warning, tired of waning, we lose our tides.
Oceans dissolve into sand, mantle melting into iron core.
We end. As a planet, as a species.
I shed my corporeal shell, become energy,
Fluctuating with the aurora on Jupiter’s moons,
Above the heads of lost girls, wondering
How beauty can persist amid humanity’s ugliness.
