Friends Afar

My thoughts of you are the ones you gave,
The ones, I cherish,
The ones, I save.

Though we are separated by time and distant space,
With you, there is quiet,
With you, there is always a place.

In His infinite wisdom the Lord has given me,
A kindred spirit,
To have shared in life, some company.

The times we've talked or played or worked in concert,
Have forever been impressed,
Here by your love, upon my heart.

And when I make my inevitable blunders,
Sometimes I expect to hear,
Your uproarious laughter, so loud and thunderous.

You will live with me as the shimmer of a glowing star,
Though distant and gone,
We will ever remain, friends afar.

Your words brought tears to my eye, Daniel. I miss my best friend so much. He died on Christmas in 2005 and I still think of him every day. At some point the football players we saw together will retire, the music we listened to will stop being replayed. But I can still hear him say, "Come on, Devonshire, you're gonna be okay." Very moving. Love, Carolyn
