Free Verse

FREE VERSE I always write poetry in rhyme, Some think it's a waste of time. Why not try to write in prose? Is the question they often pose. I'll attempt to write in free verse, No rhyming in prose is allowed. It's just like writing a simple letter, But rhyming seems so much better Oops, sorry. I must try harder and not give up, For it should be so easy writing this way If I keep my pencil flowing along, With random thoughts that come to me. While sipping a hot cup of tea. Oops again. This time I will really master it, Not a rhyme will be in sight, Though I could easily rhyme with chocolate cake, I'll not put the rhyme at the end. I'll bake roast chicken tonight, and make apple pie for lunch tomorrow, I think I'm getting the hang of it, Just write as if keeping a diary of any events, for instance; 'I went to the shop today with a list of things to buy, then met a few people and chatted about was happening in the world, After we finished chatting my list was nowhere to be found. Oh bother! This was to be my first line of prose, but would have to make it two or three lines, so it would look more like poetry, making sure it doesn't rhyme. I don't have to worry about the syllable amount So long as it looks like a poem, that's what would count. I mean 'be needed'.. Oh now I know I can ramble on about anything, I shall write free verse with abandon. Be it pickles, chocolate, a dog, a house or a cat, If put into verses, and looks like a poem, then it is a poem. So what do you think about that! Copyright © Vivien Wade Jan 25th, 2016

Thanks Daniel. Yes rhymes we heard in childhood and can still remember them. Although I have writing poems for a long time, it is only the last 3 years that I joined a poetry group and am learning how to improve my poems, and learning other forms, though still in rhyme, like the sonnets, and villanelle.
