BECAUSE I BELIEVED IN BEAUTY

Emptiness surrounds
An empty house, an empty heart
Emptiness astounds
An empty end to an empty start

It was, at first, troubling so
As trembled did my hand
While woe was doubling so
For an empty mind ne’re to understand

Understood not, could I, why each lie
For every dream was doomed to die
All the comfort traded for all that cold
And for I, birthed was beauty, such to behold

Oh the lovelorn sworn to woe
Oh the loveless lady who laid me low
Someone strange became a stranger
While prayed I, each night, to He born of a manger

But empty prayers go awry, as do empty plans
For it is beauty belligerence too often bans
Beauty banned for a man held hostage to hope
And that empty man, years later, still cannot cope
