Freckles

Connect the dots
    on her back.
Little freckles that tell a story
since the wee child ran in innocence
thinking she must be a boy.

A history does lie there.
    Connect the dots with care
and tell me what you see
on a bare back so chaste
and fair.

One dot to the other, the lines
    do connect
to tell you of abandoned hope and despair –
    not what you’d expect.

Tell me what you see
in this little girl with storied back,
bright green eyes
     grown now.

Would you tell her you can’t read?
