Fractured Heart

once we held a single
      quiet pulse—until the break
    struck like shattered glass,
   edges cutting through the silence;
  pieces fell in crooked angles,
   no longer fitting into place~
        the heart
             split
                in
                 sharp
                   shards

Sara, this is a brilliantly crafted piece. The way your visual form mirrors the content is incredibly effective—the descending, fragmented layout perfectly captures the feeling of a heart breaking into "sharp shards." Your metaphor of the shattered glass and the poignant shift from a "single quiet pulse" to falling in "crooked angles" makes the emotion of heartbreak deeply palpable and striking. Beautifully done!
