Forty Years Ago In August
Share your love and spare no moment to inject care
Into the marriage you initiate and create
I’ll grant you happiness and play fair
As you and I appreciate and celebrate
Decades of love in August you’ve given me
Unstintingly through thick and thin
Although I haven’t always been the ideal you wish I could be
To love, to hold, to mean
The world, the safety, the comfort, the support
You expect me to field, to yield, to wield
Understanding in every aspect I report in the port
You and I vowed in August to build
To honour your dignity
Your commitment and dare to withstand distraction
To buttress humility, nobility and sanity
In action, affection and veer away from action from external attraction
While keeping my eyes on the bigger picture
Scintillating in years of bliss
Developed, enveloped and evolved into the culture
I ought to promote into a matrimonial art, at least
As August supports and reports indelible memories
Built on solid ground
In real times with sumptuous stories
To share love, declare our ship fit for purpose all around
For God designed for you and I a home
Four decades ago
In Monze, not in Vienna, Venice or Rome
A delicious, precious home that for all the tea in China we can’t forgo.
