Forever and Fire Alarms

Forever is a word I long to believe,
Left alone in ashes, alone to grieve.
So many have left us deceived,
With promises empty, never achieved…

To trust that word is to cling to hope,
Yet sometimes it feels more like cope,
A dream never fulfilled
Hearts waiting to be rebuilt

How can we trust a spoken vow,
When words become a chorus somehow,
A weight we bear, a silent thrall,
A comfort until misfortune befalls?

Forever destined to wander and wonder,
When it breaks, it crashes like thunder.
Is such pain worth a single word?
Or just another lie we’ve heard?

Forever, a promise broken many a time,
Can one trust it again, or is that a crime?
We long, more than anything, to believe,
Yet why is it so hard to truly perceive?

Forever is a shackle,
Forever is a chain,
Forever is a vow,
Forever is a home

When they say that word
Would it be absurd to believe?
Yet love makes people absurd
Absurd enough to believe in forever.

You promise me forever and leave
For one now grieves something that has not died
Yet I fear that will be short-lived
We, who once thrived
Now are in shambles
Feeling more as a series of gambles

One will never be the same
You are now one’s chain
Had once made my heart ignite
One is now left in contrite

The pure cruelty of this planet
Destined never to touch a racket
Must one’s life be so utterly torturous
One was quite virtuous
Yet life had to extinguish such innocence.

How gullible one must be to believe?
How does one not seem credible?
“Swear on me… now I’m dead”
Is one worth that little trust?
Was it all just lust?

Then they ask why one questions the credibility
None of them has shown authenticity
For to them, it is just a fling
Yet I am the one to cling to the hope,
It means everything to them as it does to I
Oh, how it stings when it doesn’t.

Forever is a shackle, meant to trap one
Forever is a chain, meant to control you
Forever is a vow, a shallow, cruel vow
Forever is a home, slowly crumbling down into flames.

For I am absurd.
One longs to believe in forever
But after one’s home has been burnt down time and time again
You don’t want a home.
That’s not me giving up on love.
That’s me protecting myself after the fire alarms failed too many times.
