Forever

I’m driving through a small town.
The sun is setting,
the garage store is small,
garage stores are small forever here.
Gas, 2 sticks of beef jerky for the dog,
some gum.

Outside, the evening is settling,
a sinking sun paints itself
into a ghosting pond of light.

The sky flares one more time
revealing a shimmer of burnt orange,
a street rocking gently
on its front porches
like an old time dance.

I have been standing here gazing
at all this suddenness for many years.
Just me and this unknown life
going home
to feed a hungry dog.
