For Us
A life in service rendered,
sacrifices made and freedom given;
nothing deserves more thanks.
For us, they witness terror,
dying inside and out by the minute.
For us, they take other human lives,
doing what must be done
when others fall.
For us, they endure agony beyond imagining,
only to be berated by those they defend.
I will vouch for them,
even were I to stand alone;
nothing less have they earned.
For us, they give all -
for them, I give gratitude.
