For Too Long
For too long I have remembered you
a memory each day that pours over me
washing what was
into reflections of cluttered thoughts
from distant days
that may or may not have been true
They come like flocks of birds gliding in my mind
diving in unison, only to disperse
like fallen leaves that are scattered by the wind
torn into pieces, as brown petals do
from the stem of a dying rose
tumbling on earthen ground in an empty garden
once filled with blooms
tossed about by thoughts of love's demise
with vanishing footsteps trailing away
to a dull gray horizon, where the sun never rises
and the round sky rolls away, leaving nothing
but a hollow space where beauty was
before being torn, wilting away
on conquered ground, like a vanquished foe
left bleeding on the broken steps of loneliness
When love died
