For One More Chance
Mom’s birthday was yesterday. She has been gone five months.
FOR ONE MORE CHANCE
I would endure the water boarding,
the squeeze of my hair,
for one more chance
to feel the sensation
of mom’s hands.
Even the years of frowning face,
not unhappy, just a mom
doing her utmost
to take care
and put everything in its place.
I’d do more of what she asked,
even before she asked,
given another chance at childhood.
I’d do it right away.
I’d read mom’s mind,
sit by her side,
fold all the towels,
listen more to her childhood stories,
not talk back, love
her in so many unexpected ways,
all her lovely days.
