For Me

For Me

I arrived in just mere minutes
from the time we got the call.
A drug addict in an alley
he's just staring at the wall.

Not knowing what was waiting
I turned on my charm.
Then I saw the vacant stare
and the needle in his arm.

I started trying to save his life
but all that he would say.
Is two or three times he asked me
please don't stand in His way.

Checking on his vitals
somewhere a guitar's strumming.
He looked at me and smiled
and whispered Jesus is coming.

I said I heard that long ago
then I turned to look away.
He grabbed my hand and looked at me
and said no! I mean today.

We strapped him to the gurney
he never saw me roll my eyes.
In the alley through the shadows
it's hard to see the skies.

En-route to save an addicts life
I felt a light inside.
Then the truck we didn't see
is why that night I died.

What happened in that alley
and the thing I could not see.
Is when he said Jesus was coming
I didn't know he meant for me.

I felt the truck!! Didn't see it coming! I dealt with addicts in rehab before I retired. Man, that was hard but rewarding. Definite 7
