For Hozier

You are my whiskey “neat”
and not too sweet for me,
Hozier.

Your song inspires me
to write words
in a slim column
of slender meaning
and hopeful
 remembering.

“Bright as a mermaid,
soft as the rain”
on a lucky day,
and pick the right grapes.

If only I could create
something to listen to,
or read that was worth
a second consideration.

But I am typing,
trying at writing
while looking at “besos” (kisses)
of my mom, Alex, Ben and I.
We were younger.

I don’t like
“my coffee black
in my bed at three”
because I am arranging
thoughts and dreams.

Nothing is bitter
or too sweet for me
to distinguish
between dark spots
when other things
matter more.

I’ll help myself
to find the rhythm
 when we don’t know
the song,
the words
or the meaning.

There is laundry to do
and tomorrow
to deal with.

“I aim low,
I aim true.”

 I am
“an early bird,”
who needs to write
little letters
that make words
that matter,
if I am one
of the lucky ones.
