For Growing Older Contest Jeffry Cohan Free Cee

HOW TERRIBLY STRANGE TO BE SEVENTY
Upon my mantle rests my past
as I reach for a photo my bones crack and leaves me aghast
some recent pictures and others faded
because growing older is over-rated

brown becomes gray and backs bend
and you can no longer remember your very first friend
I used to provide for my children and gave them what they need
now often I have to borrow from them for a mouth to feed

I used to play golf and walk the links
now it hurts me even when my eye blinks
first I crawled, then I walked and now I have four wheels
and no one with vim and vitality knows how it feels

I know precisely where to find the past
I just cannot do ordinary things very fast
I gaze at yesterday on my mantle over a fireplace
and only my Lord knows what further infirmities I may face
