Footprints Behind

My footprints I left behind were different
I realized that as I turned around
anticipating I should be heading back
searching for homeward bound.

The sizes and shapes of those prints
were small and definitely not mine
I had lost my returning trace
now I was troubled and left in a bind.

The sullen sky became slowly dimmer
distantly in the night shadows fell
my senses had left me no clue
where I had gone I could not tell.

Had I gone back into the past
and could not recall the rest
there had to be a reason for this
must be rational up against this test

The footprints behind were to remind me
wherever I had been, time had stayed behind
it did not come aside, life did not hold me captive
of growing older, it freed the inner child in my mind

There were many steps behind, but no scars of longevity
life at the playground stood still, free of future’s age
suffice to say and feel I am still young at heart
freedom from stains of aging, escaping the external cage
