Notes About The Poem

Flak Kaserne was a US Army post in the town of Ludwigsburg, Germany. I was stationed there from October 1986 to May 1988. The kaserne has since been bought back from the US Army and turned into housing in 2007. This was a moment that still lives with me and is a continuation of the poem prior to this one entitled "Flak Kaserne" as the last line in this poem connects the events in the previous poem. 

Flak Kaserne (Part Two)

106th Finance ball crew
In Germany ‘87 came due
Through Army teams all
They answered the call
With bats, gloves, and grit in full view

In double elimination they played
One early loss had them waylaid 
To the loser’s bracket sent
But their spirits weren’t bent
And a comeback was soon to be played

They battled through game after game
With the trophy still calling their name
To the winner’s team’s door
They came roaring once more
And won the first clash just the same

Then up to the plate came Rambo
A line drive to center set them a scramble 
To second he sped
With victory ahead
And the tournament hanging in limbo

A grounder was hit to short
Who bobbled the ball in contort
Then threw low to third
Where the runner transferred
In a slide that was of historic report

Headfirst to the bag he did slide
Keeping hope for 106th Finance alive
The glove, ball, and hand
Met together in tand' 
And the ball broke away from the dive

With two outs, that moment was gold
For the rally still had to unfold
He scored on a hit
And the team would not quit
Until the championship story  was told

Now years later, the trophy does gleam
A reminder of how hard we fought as a team 
And redemption was found
As that slide does resound
For the error played back at Flak’s dream
